Inspired by Norwegian food traditions, our kitchen team will serve up the most delicious dishes – and our sommeliers will recommend wines to complement the meal perfectly. With over 1,000 labels to choose from, Altona is the winebar in Norway with the largest selection of wine.
Under the low ceilings of one the oldest inns in Bergen, there are six different ‘caves’ with a total capacity of up to 100 people. In the meandering passages, guest will find intimate seating in rustic surroundings. The two largest rooms have beamed ceiling, whereas the others are stone vaulted. This is the ideal space for those important conversations – in a comfortable armchair by the open fire, or during informal wine tastings and meals with your friends, family, or colleagues.
In the 1600s, Bergen had 10,000 inhabitants and was Norway’s largest town. It also had some 400 inns of which Altona was one of the most renowned. The inn welcomed guests from all walks of life, ranging from craftsmen to affluent townsfolk. It also featured the town’s most prominent concert hall, and was the birthplace of musical and dramatic societies such as Musikkselskabet Harmonien, Det Dramatiske Selskab, and Det Nyttige Selskab.
Our backyard is ideal for an alfresco drink, and is equipped with large umbrellas as well as patio heaters and blankets to keep you warm. In this comfortable space sheltered from the wind, you will also find a sculpture by Pål Vigeland.
Altona has received recognition by Wine Spectator for its vast selection of champagne and wine, and has been honoured with the exclusive Best of Award of Excellence since 2009. With over 1,000 labels in our cellar, we confident there is something to suit every taste.
Altona is a proud member of “Smak av kysten”, a culinary network promoting use of the very best ingredients the ocean has to offer. Throughout the year, our guests will find the season’s best seafood dishes on our menu – fresh coastal cod in winter, herring and ocean tusk in spring, mackerel in summer, and shellfish in autumn.
